Humming Bird Butterfly

by Steven John Koeppe - Acrylic on Canvas, 24" x 36"

While hiking Temescal Canyon recently a friend asked whether I had ever heard of a Humming Bird Butterfly. I hadn't. She explained how it could hover while feeding on nectar with it's very long proboscis. That sounded pretty cool. Just as we ended our hike she pointed toward a large bunch of lupin blossoms. Several of them hovered while feeding. I used my camera and flash to capture a closeup of this fascinating creature. The top outside wings remain stationary in flight as its tiny wings below allow it to hover and move much like a humming bird. To view my photo I worked from CLICK HERE.
